Respiratory Filter Selection Guide
Understanding the right respiratory protection is critical to ensuring safety in environments with airborne hazards. This guide provides an overview of common respirator filter ratings, gas filter types, and chemical filter recommendations to help you make informed decisions about the appropriate protective equipment for your workplace or task.

What is P1 Rating?
- Respirator filter rating under AS/NZS1716 for use in Australasia
- Filters ≥80% of airborne particles
- Suitable for larger particles (≥1 micron) from mechanical processes e.g. grinding, sanding
What is P2 Rating?
- Filters ≥94% of airborne particles
- Protects against mechanically and thermally generated particles
- Sub-micron hazards like welding fumes, bushfire smoke
- Biological hazards (e.g. viruses, bacteria, COVID-19)
What is N95 Rating?
- N95 follows NIOSH standards used in USA and Canada
- Filters ≥95% of airborne particles
- Similar protection to P2 (mechanical + thermal)
- Used for infectious control (e.g. COVID-19, SARS)
What is P3 Rating?
- Filters ≥99.95% of airborne particles
- Protects against very fine toxic dusts, fumes & biological agents
- Often used in hazardous environments e.g. asbestos removal
- Can only be achieved with a full-face respirator or PAPR system
Types Of Gas Filters
Each filter is designated by a letter or chemical abbreviation indicative of the substances or group of substances against which protection is intended. A class number indicates the level of absorption capacity. If a filter is a combination of types, it shall meet the requirements of each type separately.
The designation of filter type shall comply with one or a combination of the following:

How Long Does A Respirator Filter Last?
The lifespan of filters vary depending on the filter type, concentration of contaminants, breathing rate, humidity, and environmental conditions. The end of service life can be recognised by:
Particle Filter - Increased breathing resistance of the filter. Drop of the air flow, or triggering the 'low airflow' alarm when used in combination with a PAPR system.
Gas Filters - A noticeable taste or smell of the contaminent
Combination Filters - A noticeable taste or smell of the contaminent and/or increased breathing resistance of the filter. A noticeable taste or smell of the contaminent and/or drop of the air flow, or triggering the 'low airflow' alarm when used in combination with a PAPR system.
