How Often Should I Replace My Respirator Filters/Cartridges?
Types of 3M Respirator Filters
3M provides several filter types, each designed for specific hazards:
- Particulate Filters: Protect against particles such as dust, mist, smoke, mould, bacteria, and aerosols only.
- Gas & Vapour Cartridge Filters: Protect against gases and vapours only.
- Combination Filters: Provide protection against both particles and gases/vapours.
Why Replace Filters Regularly?
Particulate filters can become clogged, making breathing harder and increasing fatigue during use. Gas and vapour filters use sorbent materials that saturate over time, which can allow harmful contaminants to pass through (called breakthrough).
When to Replace 3M Particulate Filters
Replace particulate filters when:
- Breathing becomes difficult.
- Filters become dirty or physically damaged.
Replacement frequency depends on individual use and working conditions.
These filters trap particles using electrostatically charged fibers. As filters load with contaminants, filtration improves but breathing resistance increases.
AS/NZS1716 Particulate Filter Classes
Filter | Protection | Example |
---|---|---|
P1 | Particles from mechanical processes | Sanding, grinding |
P2 | Particles from mechanical and thermal processes | Welding |
P3 | Highly toxic particles | Hazardous dust and fumes |
When to Replace 3M Gas & Vapour Cartridge Filters
Several factors affect cartridge lifespan, including contaminant type, ventilation, temperature, and breathing rates. Replace cartridges when:
- The expiry date on the sealed packet has passed.
- Six months have elapsed since opening, regardless of use.
- The user detects smell or taste of contaminants.
These filters absorb gases and vapours using specially treated carbon sorbents.
AS/NZS1716 Gas & Vapour Cartridge Classes
Filter | Protection |
---|---|
A | Organic Vapours (boiling point > 65ºC) |
B | Inorganic Gases |
E | Acid Gases |
K | Ammonia |
Hg | Mercury |
G | Organic Compounds with Low Vapour Pressures |
Combination Filters
Combination filters protect against both particulates and gases/vapours. Their lifespan depends on the same factors as the individual particulate and gas/vapour filters.
