The reliability of your products and the satisfaction of the customers who receive them is only as good as the quality of the preparation you make before shipment. Using a pallet to manage large shipments is one of the most effective ways to make sure that your products are properly organized for each customer and protected during transport. Loads becoming damaged due to excessive movement while in transit is common and these shipping accidents can be extremely costly. Just as worrisome are accidents during the preparation process that can be very dangerous and leave you with injured employees, damaged products, and useless equipment. Fortunately, by using the right techniques and packaging equipment, Brisbane companies can avoid these accidents and minimize costs associated with packaging and shipment disasters.

Use these tips to help you wrap and ship pallets safely and effectively:

  • Understand the different types of load movement. Damage to loads is most often caused by movement during transport. This could be while your employees are moving the loaded pallets around your warehouse, while the pallets are in transit on trucks, or while the customer is moving the pallets into storage on their property. This movement is classified as three basic types: vibration, shear, and sway. Understanding these movements makes it easier for your employees to protect themselves during loading and movement and to wrap the pallets for maximum protection. Vibration occurs when the individual items within a load shake due to uneven terrain, bumps, or rough conditions in the truck. Shear happens when the layers of a load slide away from one another, and sway is when the columns of a load separate and topple. Wrapping and strapping effectively holds the items in place to prevent all of these types of movement
  • Use the proper equipment. Something as simple as integrating automatic wrapping equipment into your shipment preparation process can ensure the safest, most secure finished pallets and protect your employees. A pallet wrapping machine automatically applies the wrap, ensuring appropriate layering and eliminates the need for your employees to have to run around in circles or attempt to spin the pallets in order to apply the layers of shrink wrap. Using a strapping machine enables you to attach supportive straps around your load so the items are held together while also being held to the pallet. Some companies choose to use strapping instead of shrink wrapping, while others use both to ensure the firmest hold and protection from water and dust. A good rule of thumb is that if your team is wrapping 15 or more pallets a day, wrapping equipment will save your company time and money
  • Layer properly.  How your employees layer the shrink wrap on your pallet loads is one of the most important elements of keeping themselves and the products safe. Using automatic pallet wrappers makes this easier, but it is still important that everyone on the team who is involved in the actual wrapping process to know the most effective steps for wrapping each load. Pre-stretching the shrink wrap ensures the material holds the items securely rather than stretching out of shape and losing integrity during transit. Also remember to always start wrapping at the bottom of the pallet and overlap layers by 50 percent as you move up. This helps prevent the individual items from tipping as you wrap. When finished, test the strength of the layers. If your team notices excessive movement, start another layer at the top of the pallet and move down. Be sure the wrap is secure both when starting and when finishing the wrap.
